India advocates for a global coordination mechanism to regulate AI, Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Railways, and Information & Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said on June 3 at the Global INDIAai Summit 2024. The Minister further said that the Indian government has outlined a two-pronged strategy that focuses on harnessing AI’s power while establishing robust safeguards. 

The upcoming India AI Mission will follow the twin approach. This mission is expected to be launched in two-three months with a budget of over ₹10,300 crore allocated for five years, as per a report by Telegraph India.

Approved by the cabinet in March, the mission aims to develop India’s AI ecosystem across seven pillars, including creating a robust national AI computing infrastructure, fostering innovation through dedicated centers, and establishing a centralized platform for high-quality datasets.

Addressing the gathering, the Union Minister also emphasized the government’s vision to make AI accessible to everyone. He shared that the government intends to invest in AI focused common use public platforms, which can be used by one and all to innovate, develop and deliver the products and services in a competitive and collaborative manner.

He spoke on the development in AI space by Japan, European Union, USA, and UN. He cautioned on the risks posed by AI, which can be a threat to democratic communities, and called for responsible and human centered AI.

The two-day Global INDIAai Summit 2024 commenced on June 3 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, featuring prominent experts and thought leaders in the AI industry. Today, marking the second day of the event is packed with insightful sessions from leading experts in the AI industry. 

The first day of the summit saw participation from Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) experts, industry veterans, AI practitioners, and government officials. The sessions covered a range of topics including large language models, AI in global health, real-world AI solutions, infrastructure readiness for AI, and collaborative AI partnerships.
